First Responders

Pipelines are the safest way to transport oil and natural gas. Although ExxonMobil Pipeline Company (EMPCo) integrates safety into all our facilities and operations, we constantly prepare to respond to emergency situations. And we want our communities to be prepared too. EMPCo sponsors the participation of local and regional emergency responders in programs, such as the Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service (TEEX) HazMat Liquid & CO2 Pipeline and Industrial Fire Emergencies training, designed to provide them with the education and resources to address pipeline and tank emergencies.

2026 First Responder Trainings

ExxonMobil is pleased to sponsor three regional training facilities focused on emergency preparedness for first responders. Responders may enroll in any course that is of interest with no limitations on availability. Registration for each session is limited, so early enrollment is encouraged.

All participants are encouraged to complete NASFM's Hazardous Materials Technician course prior to attending any of the below regional classes.

Partnering with LA FETA and RPCC

ExxonMobil Pipeline Company partnered with the Louisiana Fire & Emergency Training Academy (LA FETA) and River Parishes Community College (RPCC) in 2025 to develop La-PET, a Louisiana CO2 Pipeline Emergencies Training course. This course is meant to help equip firefighters, emergency responders and public safety officials with the knowledge and skills to safely and effectively respond to incidents involving carbon dioxide pipelines. Training topics include the unique hazards of CO2 in both gaseous and supercritical states, recognition of release indicators, air monitoring strategies, tactical considerations and more.

Past Trainings

  • ExxonMobil Pipeline Company sponsored four HazMat Liquid & CO2 Pipeline and Industrial Fire Emergencies trainings in 2025, in partnership with TEEX. First responders from departments across the Gulf Coast and beyond participated.

In addition, in 2025, we expanded collaboration for first responder trainings in Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas. We partnered with the Mississippi State Fire Academy to design and sponsor a course specializing in emergency response to CO2 incidents. The first class was held in September with a second class in November. In Louisiana, we worked with the Louisiana Fire & Emergency Training Academy and River Parishes Community College to develop a course featuring emergency response to CO2 incidents. The first class was held in October. Finally, in Texas, a special TEEX training was held in Beaumont, Texas, at the IRFT Training Center in the spring.

  • Just as we’re evolving to be a leader in the energy transition, our safety training is evolving too. Since the development of the course in 2019, the training has adapted to provide the hands-on skills our first responders need to keep the communities we serve safe, including a simulated CO2 release exercise.

Making this training accessible to even more first responders, in 2024, ExxonMobil developed a mobile training trailer that contains pipeline props and other materials we use to provide realistic training to fire departments that service our facilities.
